AIDS 2010 Engagement Tours


The Engagement Tours will provide delegates with unique learning experiences through interactive site visits to local institutions in Vienna. The goal is to exchange knowledge, best practices, successes, challenges, and innovative solutions through dialogue and hands-on activities.

Tours are available to conference delegates at no cost. Volunteers will guide the delegates to participating institutions via public transport. To register, please send an e-mail to . Registration is on a first-come first-served basis. As demand for the tours is high we cannot guarantee space for all interested delegates. Tours are limited to one tour per delegate.

The meeting point for the tours is at the entrance to the Global Village near the registration area - look for the sign ‘Engagement Tours Meeting Point’. Details on the tour schedule and participating institutions are listed below. Delegates who wish to participate should assemble at the meeting point 15 minutes prior to departure.

Aids Hilfe Wien

Location: Mariahilfer Gürtel 4, 1060 Wien

Aids Hilfe Wien is Austria’s primary non-profit institution working in the field of HIV and AIDS. It offers services in prevention, counseling and testing and psychosocial support for the general population as well as PLHIV and their social environment. Professionals in each area will be present and will provide information on their daily work as well as future aspects. At the end of the tour delegates will be invited to chat with staff over tea and coffee. Russian interpretation is available.


AKH (Allgemeines Krankenhaus) - General Hospital

Location: Währinger Gürtel 18-20, 1090 Wien

The AKH-General Hospital Vienna is the largest hospital in Europe and one of the tallest hospital buildings in the world. The former general hospital’s inscription from 1784 "Saluti et solatio aegrorum" (“To heal and comfort the sick”) expresses the staff’s commitment to medical care. The tour to general hospital’s HIV-clinic will offer insights on treatment, health-care and best practices in Vienna.


Baumgartner Höhe – Otto-Wagner-Spital

Location: Baumgartner Höhe 1, 1140 Wien

Delegates participating in this tour will have the opportunity to learn about the work and insights of the HIV-Clinic at Baumgartner Höhe. The tour will appeal to delegates with a particular interest in HIV care, treatment, patient management and laboratory diagnostics.


Buddy Verein

The “buddy-verein” is an NGO based on volunteer work that has been active in Vienna for the past 24 years. It was the first of its kind in Austria and still is an unparalleled initiative here. Its purpose is the improving and strengthening of the psycho-social situation of people living with HIV and AIDS. The “buddy-verein” with its dual projects offers double support: buddies meet with their clients regularly on a one-to-one basis, they provide emotional company. Helper cells step in when all kind of practical assistance at home is needed or short term hospital visits are requested. Delegates will receive information about our volunteer work, with special emphasis on the importance of an assessment and training procedure.


Ganslwirt Clinic

Location: Rotenmühlgasse 26, 1120 Wien

The Ganslwirt Clinic is a facility and service for drug users in Vienna and provides harm reduction programmes. The focus is to reduce the negative physical, mental and social affects of drug use. The service offers general medical assessment and treatment, clinical examinations and referrals, crisis beds and a needle exchange programme. Delegates will learn about the clinic's work and harm reduction in Vienna.


Police Detention Centre

Tour Date and Time: Wednesday 21 July from 11:00 to 14:00 hrs

Location: Roßauer Lände 9, 1090 Vienna

The tour will provide delegates with information about the harm reduction programme in Vienna’s detention center. For many years the detention center has worked closely with the organization ‘Dialog’ to secure the medical and social care of drug-using prisoners. Delegates will have a chance to learn about the best practices of this harm reduction programme.


Polymun

Location: Nussdorfer Lände 11, 1190 Wien

Polymun is a private company developing and manufacturing biopharmaceuticals and liposomal formulations. Polymun is partner in several international research projects in the field of HIV contributing its three broadly neutralizing HIV-1 antibodies 2F5, 4E10 and 2G12 for clinical studies (FP6: EMPRO, FP7: CHAARM), liposomal formulation of HIV envelope antigens (FP7: EuroNeut-41) or general scientific networking (FP6: EUROPRISE). Polymun is manufacturing gp140 envelope proteins as research reagents and clinical grades for research projects sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust (e.g. MUCOVAC). The tour to Polymun will show the scientific side of work in the field of HIV and AIDS in Vienna. Delegates should have a basic scientific knowledge to participate in this tour.


Streetwork

Tour Date and Time: Thursday 22 July from 11:00 to 14:00 hrs
 
Location: Karlsplatzpassage, 1010 Vienna

This harm reduction programme works with drug users in drug - dealing areas and offers counseling and information about drug use. Delegates will be provided with information about safer drug use and the main principles of harm reduction.


Grüner Kreis

Tour Date and Time: Thursday 22 July from 11:00 to 14:00 hrs

Location: Rudolfsplatz 9, 1010 Vienna

The “Grüner Kreis” is a society for the rehabilitation and integration of addicted persons. Dr. Robert Muhr, Director of Treatment, will give a brief presentation and speak with delegates on key aspects of inpatient therapy (both long and short-term) as well as outpatient therapy. The tour will focus on the inpatient therapy of substitution patients living with HIV and hepatitis C (HCV).


SOPHIE

Tour Date and Time: Tuesday 20 July from 15:00 to 18:00 hrs
 
Location: Oelweingasse 6 – 8, 1150 Wien

SOPHIE is a place of education for female sex workers. The aim of this programme is to expand the scope of action of sex workers within and outside sex work. SOPHIE is a contact point for women who work or have worked as a sex worker. Women from the peer group are involved in the team. SOPHIE’s services for female sex workers include outreach work, crisis intervention, a communication lounge, counselling in social and legal matters, long-term support and assistance. All services are anonymous and free of cost. Delegates will receive more detailed information about the daily work of SOPHIE and will have the possibility to speak to staff members.
